Engagement in the arts can help youth in a myriad of ways; such as being a vehicle for self-expression, acquiring communication skills and developing skills to aid in focus and teamwork.

VMT seeks to enrich the cultural vitality of the Hampton Roads Community by offering musical theatre at affordable prices and continues to mentor young performers through training, performance and scholarship programs aimed to prepare the next generation of artists for work on the professional stage.

Quite often we are able to offer Master Classes to young musical theatre students in the community. This exciting opportunity has professional Equity actors from New York who are in VMT's productions work with students in such areas as audition technique and repertoire, as well as information regarding the life of an artist in New York City; auditioning, finding an agent, getting head shots, finding an apartment, etc. It's an exciting win-win for all of us!

The close relationship between Virginia Musical Theatre and The Governor's School for the Arts is one of the unique features that guarantees VMT's mission to cultivate and encourage young artists. Through our Internship program with their Musical Theatre Department, young actors are given the opportunity to work with seasoned professionals on stage as well as off. We are proud to support and help develop these young artists, many of whom will go on to careers in the arts and will pass on the knowledge they learned to future generations the way it was passed on to them.
