As you, our patrons know, Virginia Musical Theatre provides professional musical theatre to Hampton Roads audiences, designed to entertain all ages with shows that capture the imagination and enrich the soul.  In short, we bring the best of Broadway to the Sandler Center.  But did you know that VMT’s impact on the community reaches beyond you, the audience?

VMT provides a vibrant, collaborative professional venue that attracts and nurtures emerging artists, many of whom have gone on to appear on Broadway, in touring shows and on television.  All of our shows feature equity actors, selected through auditions held in New York.   Through collaboration with the Governor’s School for the Arts and open auditions that attract the best talents in the Hampton Roads region and beyond, VMT productions provide theatrical opportunities not otherwise available.  It offers the experience necessary for emerging talents to showcase their skills and build a portfolio that can launch a career.

As Virginia Musical Theatre enters its 27th season, I believe you will find our lineup of productions as magical and entertaining as has become our standard.    Our opening show, Mamma Mia!, will set the season’s tone.  It’s guaranteed to have you dancing in your seat and singing along to the music of ABBA.  In a break with tradition, our December show will be a new Disney musical being staged for the first time in the area, Freaky Friday.  Let the whole family take a break from the holiday songs and traditional Christmas shows to share in this mother-daughter adventure.

Continuing in March with the musical show, Jekyll & Hyde, the audience will be captivated by the musical adaptation of this classic story of good and evil.  Featuring pop rock hits and the suspense inherent to this tale, you’ll relearn a familiar story in an unfamiliar, delightful way.  The season will end in April with the Broadway musical Kiss Me, Kate.  The show is hilarious.  If you saw it  before, you know it is a must see again, and if you have never experienced this musical version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, your chance has arrived.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I invite you to sit back and enjoy another wonderful season at the theater knowing your support not only entertains our audiences but also grows emerging artists throughout our community.
